What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a Sanskrit term that means “the science of life” or “life knowledge.” Ayurvedic medicine is a system that originated in northern India over 5,000 years ago primarily from one of the Vedic texts, the ancient books of wisdom and ceremony that contributed a great deal to the foundation of Indian culture and civilization. It includes a system of herbalism similar to that of traditional Chinese medicine, but also offers dietary regulation, yoga and other exercises, bodywork, detoxification, and psychological interventions.

According to the Ayurvedic perspective, being “healthy” is more than the absence of disease – it is a radiant state of vigor and energy, which is achieved by balance, or moderation, in food intake, sleep, sexual intercourse and other activities of daily life, complemented by various treatments including a wide variety of plant-based medicines.

How Many Times Per Week Should I Practice?

Daily practice is most beneficial. Even 5-10 minutes of meditation or breathing has benefits.

What Does Om Mean?

Om is said to be the first sound heard at the creation of the universe. When each syllable is pronounced fully, you should feel the energy of the sound lifting from your pelvic floor all the way up through the crown of your head. The droning sound of the Om is said to unblock the throat chakra, which can lead to more attuned communication with others.

What Does Namaste Mean?

This is my favorite Sanskrit word because it’s fun to say–nah’-mah’-stay. It means: The divine light within me salutes the divine light within you. My incredibly simplified translation: I’m awesome. You’re awesome. All these other people are awesome. Isn’t it awesome that we just practiced yoga together? Thanks for your presence.

If I want to lose weight, should I be doing more than yoga?

Probably. One beginner class per week is not enough to generate weight loss. Once you learn the basic poses and are ready to “flow” the Vinyasa class will help to raise your heart rate. Daily walking of 30 minutes or more is also recommended as is additional strength training. And of course, an individual consultation can help you to determine what else you can do to achieve weight loss.

I’m Not Flexible—Can I Do Yoga?

Yes! This is one of the main reasons TO DO yoga. Start with the Beginner’s class and with consistent practice you will see improvements.
